About

Rice has amazing qualities – it is more than a grain. Here at PhilRice.net, our experiences with rice aren’t unique, but does make us passionate about rice and its many uses, gifts and pleasures. Here is some of our story…

In New York, Tokyo and many other parts of the world, I have sat barefoot on a mat of woven rice straw called a tatami; gotten drunk on saki, beer, and whiskey all brewed from rice. I’ve eaten dishes of rice seasoned with rice vinegar and topped with strips of beef  that was raised on a diet of rice bran. In California, I have seen rice hulls destined for local power companies where they will be burned to provide energy. In Morocco, Egypt, India and China, I have worn leather shoes made supple with rice oil, and worn clothes cut from synthetic fiber made from a rice hull product called furfural. I’ve walked through rice paddies in Thailand and Kashmir, and at home in the US, have walked through beautiful flowering gardens that are growing in soil fertilized with hulls of rice. In China, I started my day with spoonfuls of warm cooked rice cereal (congee) and, in America nothing beats rice crispies swimming with milk and bananas. Rice, a staple food for more than half of the earth’s population, is an amazing grain.
